Ras Al Khaimah Industries Raising 16% Less Dust (11 March 2010)

According to Dr Saif Al Ghais, executive director of the Ras Al Khaimah Environmental Protection and Development Authority (EPDA-RAK), imposing new laws to cut back on the emission percentage was not the way out.

Dust emission from rock-crushing units, quarries and cement factories in Ras Al Khaimah dropped 16 per cent last year.

According to Dr Saif Al Ghais, executive director of the Ras Al Khaimah Environmental Protection and Development Authority (EPDA-RAK), this decrease in the emission percentage does not in any way represent a target set by the authority and more work is needed in the years to come.

He was speaking on Monday during a celebration the EPDA-RAK organised to mark its third anniversary since it was set up by the emirate’s government under the Emirati Decree No. 2 for the year 2007.

Dr Al Ghais said imposing new laws to cut back on the emission percentage was not the way out. It was more important that the companies understood the necessity of reducing dust pollution and worked on individual targets, he said.

Eleven crushers out of the 30 based in the emirate were honoured during the celebrations for implementing
right environmental strategies.

Dr Al Ghais noted that most of the emirate’s cement factories had begun following EPDA-RAK guidelines despite the fact that some violations were reported.
